What bark screening is, how it looks and lasts, and how to put it up — the warm, woodland way to get instant garden privacy.
Bark screening is the warmest, most rustic way to add instant privacy to a garden. Made from strips of real tree bark bound onto a wire backing, it rolls out in minutes and turns a plain boundary into something that looks like it grew there. Here's what it is, how it lasts and how to put it up.
What is bark screening?
Bark screening is natural tree bark — usually pine or larch — laid in vertical strips and bound onto a strong galvanised wire framework. It comes on a roll, typically 1.8 m tall, and gives a dense, textured, woodland look. Every roll is a little different, with rich reddish-brown tones and the cracked, ridged character of real bark.

How private is it?
Very. The bark strips sit tightly together for near-solid cover, so it screens views well while still letting a little air through. It also softens wind and traffic noise, which makes it popular for boundaries and seating areas.
How long does bark screening last?
Kept off wet ground and fixed to a solid frame, quality bark screening lasts several years outdoors. Like all natural materials it weathers gently — the warm brown mellows to a soft silver-brown over time, which many people love. Good airflow behind it and a dry base help it last longer.

How to put up bark screening
- Fix it to a solid support — an existing fence, wire, or timber posts every 40–60 cm.
- Unroll along the line and keep the top edge level.
- Fasten with cable ties or galvanised staples through the wire backing, every 20–30 cm.
- Keep the bottom edge just off the ground so it stays dry.
- Trim to length with shears; overlap joins by a few centimetres.
Frequently asked questions
What is bark screening made of?
Strips of natural tree bark (usually pine or larch) bound onto a galvanised wire backing — 100% natural, no plastic.
How tall is a bark screening roll?
Our standard rolls are 1.8 m tall, with other sizes available to project. Length is typically 3 m per roll.
Can I fix it to an existing fence?
Yes — that's the most common use. Cable-tie or staple it straight over a wire or panel fence to hide a tired boundary.
