The material
Natural thatch, the way it's always been made
Natural thatch grows in barren mountainous areas — in China, mostly in the north — with a lifespan of around six to eight years and strong natural corrosion resistance. It's a seasonal material, harvested each autumn and then sun-dried to over 90% dryness before it is used.
Each panel is hand-made: light-brown hemp thread bound to a thick, dry natural bamboo slat. Because the thatch is grown outside jungle areas, it stays insect-free and odourless.
